The Medusa Locket - Ajarn Apichai

Coming soon

In Greek mythology, Medusa is remembered for her terrifying gaze, capable of turning those who looked upon her into stone. Yet her story extends beyond the monster she is commonly portrayed as. Beauty, transformation, punishment, and protection are all intertwined within her mythology, making her a rather fascinating figure to incorporate into sorcery.

Over the years, my teacher, Ajarn Apichai of Chiang Mai, Thailand, has exchanged knowledge and ideas with sorcerers from different parts of the world, myself included. These exchanges have introduced influences from magical traditions beyond Thailand, inspiring him to experiment with what I would describe as fusion amulets, incorporating foreign symbolism and concepts into his own established methods of Thai sorcery.

The Medusa Locket is one such creation.

Rather than simply reproducing the image of a Greek mythological figure, Ajarn has approached Medusa through his own magical understanding, bringing together her legendary qualities with the methods and materia familiar to his practice.

The intentions behind this amulet concern protection against hostility, jealousy, malicious intentions, and unwanted influences. Medusa’s ability to petrify those who confronted her becomes a symbolic foundation for restraining opposition, commanding respect, and discouraging those who would seek to cause harm.

There is, however, another aspect to consider. Before becoming the monstrous figure of legend, Medusa was also associated with beauty. This duality brings an additional dimension of personal charm, attraction, and influence to the work. The ability to draw attention when desired, while possessing the authority to discourage it when unwelcome.

The front of the locket depicts Medusa surrounded by sacred script. Its reverse contains a specially prepared mixture of magical materia, accompanied by two takruts and an inscribed piece, all enclosed within a protective casing.

As a student of Ajarn Apichai, I have a particular appreciation for these creations, especially those that emerge from the exchange of ideas between practitioners of different traditions. I personally keep one of these Medusa lockets, and have decided to make this additional piece available through Manticore’s Den.

This locket has not been personally bound to an individual. It is offered as a completed amulet made by Ajarn Apichai, without the additional personal binding associated with certain commissioned pieces. It is accessible to anyone wishing to work with it.
